History of the Telephone AM

Bell’s Telephone
Bell’s Invention

Several inventors were looking for a way to transmit voices. One of them was Alexander Graham Bell, a Scottish – born teacher of the deaf. Bell has been working on his invention since 1865. In March 1876, he was ready to test his “talking machine.” Bell sat in one room while his assistant, Thomas Watson, sat in another room waiting for a voice. Finally he heard Bell’s voice, Watson rushed to Bell and cried “I heard every word you said!” Their invention was a success! Bell formed the Bell Telephone Company in 1877. In 1885, he had sold more than 300,000 phones. He mostly sold his phones to businesses to speed up trade. People no longer had to go to a telegraph office to send messages, business people could find out about prices or supplies by picking up the telephone.

Bell’s Telephone Company

The Bell Telephone Company, a common law joint stock company, was organized in Boston, Massachusetts on July 9, 1877 by Alexander Graham Bell's father-in-law Gardiner Greene Hubbard, who also helped organize a sister company — the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company. The National Bell Telephone Company subsequently merged with others on March 20, 1880 to form the American Bell Telephone Company, also of Boston, Massachusetts

The American Bell Telephone Company would later evolve into the American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T), at times the world's largest telephone company.
